Today’s developments are seeing IP protocol, database upload, and many other technologies being integrated into ACARS (Figure 1). As a consequence of these advancements in communications an unsecured airborne system or aircraft can lead to a compromise in safety.

The challenges which exist in the cyber world have migrated to the aviation network. The risks associated with network exponentially increases in the connected aviation network. The aerospace systems built over the years were not developed with security in mind and software upgrades for the security requirements on the post facto certification baselines are either costly or ineffective. This situation is posing unprecedented opportunities for compromises which could compromise the trust built over the years on airborne systems and air travel.
