It is a universal truth that a system cannot be functionally safe unless it is secure. The connectivity envisioned for the digital battlefield is such that any security breach has the potential to compromise the whole system. Overall systems security can only be achieved if sub-systems, sensors, gateways, and applications offer no weak links to aggressors.

Cyberspace has been considered a theatre of war ever since the concept came into existence. Just as for a conventional battlefield, the digital space is about dominance and protection. These two words embody the whole goal of robust networks and communications systems, which represent the backbone of the digital battlefield. Securing a communications system of such complexity will be a far more demanding challenge than the monitoring and managing of a traditional IT network. Armed forces must be prepared to monitor, maintain and secure a huge communications system.

Nor will that task ever be completed. To utilize all the resources, building expertise and strengthening skills is equally important, with the emphasis on building and defending complex systems. Every resource should be able to identify problems and issues as they arise to make sure unimpeded and uninterrupted communications and the security of the information being exchanged.
